For the Café Bizarre’s tourists, the Velvet Underground was too outré, too shocking, and just plain too loud. The café manager forced Maureen Tucker to forego her bass drum and just tap a tambourine. In the end, the band players played their “The Black Angel’s Death Song” one too many times and were fired. Andy Warhol was impressed.
